To change or not to change? Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Whether you choose to wear your medical scrubs in public depends on a variety of factors, including your personal preference.
Here are a few things to take into consideration when making this decision:
If you care for patients in a sterile environment, such as an operating room, you should probably keep your scrubs in the workplace. A 2004 study conducted by New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens focused on germs carried by doctors versus security guards. They compared the ties of 40 doctors and med students, as well as 10 taken from security personnel. The results showed that roughly 50% of the ties worn by the medical staff were harboring germs, while only 10% of the security guards’ were harboring germs.
However, if your workplace doesn’t have a changing facility, you might have to slip on your scrubs at home.
Your Job Description
If you are working with contagious patients on a regular basis, you should probably change out of those scrubs before leaving work. A Connecticut hospital study found that medical professionals who went into a room with an MRSA patient ended up with the pathogen on their clothing roughly 70% of the time. In some cases they didn’t even come into physical contact with the patient.
Just to be safe, avoid accidental contamination by leaving your scrubs at work.
It’s never a good idea to venture out into the world with soiled scrubs. Not only is it unappealing, but you could also spread germs. Give yourself a quick check before you go out in public to grab lunch.
Show Off Your Scrubs!
On the other side of the coin, if you don’t deal with the things listed above, showing off your scrubs in public can be a way to show you’re proud of your profession (or you’re too exhausted to change). Ultimately, it comes down to common sense whether or not it’s a good idea to wear your scrubs in public, just make sure you’re wearing scrubs that you’re proud of!
